Concept of the month October 2009: WEBSITE

Welcome to LangPep’s monthly blog. Here I will briefly discuss a linguistic concept that for some reason forms part of my current affairs. As I am publicly announcing the launch of my website today, I am dedicating this first blog to the concept website.

The English word website has been integrated in the modern world in a way that hardly allows for any translation. Still, there are some languages that have produced their own term. My beloved Spanish is one of them: sitio web, literally: place in the network. As you see, even here the lemma ‘web’ remains untouchable, because the Spanish word for 'web’ is red.

Much like the majestic cormorant freely skimming the sea, web searches the linguistic world for concepts to catch like helpless, unsuspecting fish. Web oriented… SNAP! Web based…SNAP! Web page…SNAP!

Although I’d like to call myself a language purist, I can live with that. As long as it’s a cormorant. May mine fly swiftly and smoothly!
