Concept of the month December 2014: SOCKS

Clothes have never interested me very much. Although I have tried to learn some things from my girlfriend, I myself hardly get past distinguishing what to wear on a cycling trip from what to wear to a wedding. However, I have recently been occupied with one garment in particular, one that rarely catches the eye. In doing this, I am following an old piece of advice my father once gave me: “Mind your own socks.”

So, any sock that looks slightly worn, is thrown out. And there are quite a few, because I have difficult feet: long, narrow, bony and with crooked toes. Thinking about socks, I recall a discussion I had when I was 15. A classmate and I disputed what purpose socks essentially serve. I reckoned it was to keep your feet warm, while he believed it was to prevent sweat from reaching your shoes. But what if you are not wearing any shoes? Do they then serve the purpose of keeping your feet clean? Some say it is healthier to walk barefoot than on shoes. Do socks count there?

Our baby loves taking off his socks. Even when he is wearing tights, he tries with all his strength. His grandpa would be proud.
