Concept of the month April 2010: PANINI ALBUM

“Got me yet?” “I’ve got you twice.”

As a child, I used to drop by the local cigar shop every week in the spring, just to ask whether it was time yet. When the big day had come, I'd burst into the shop, armed with my pocket money savings and an empty rucksack and all excited. After eagerly inhaling the odour of fresh printing ink, I’d rush home to start unwrapping, pasting and sorting doubles to swap at school the next day. One more browse through the book. Me and my Panini album.

Since this month, sixteen years later, I am back in the world of pictures, packs and swapsies. All because Wartburgia, the football club I play for, has published its very own Wartnini album.

Now I am one of dozens of grown-up men and women who gather in and around the canteen twice a week for a frenzy of unwrapping, pasting and swapping. At the opening of each pack, our eyes widen. That’s when the key difference is revealed with the stickers from the olden days. While you used to be pleased only if the face you saw was missing in your book, it can now be that of a friend’s. And there are more of those every week.
